Grades 2-5

Targets comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and phonics. Direct instruction, engaging video clips, and cooperative learning support strategic reading of both narrative and expository texts.

Based on CIRC Research: Slavin, R. E., Lake, C., Chambers, B., Cheung, A. & Davis, S. (in press). Effective reading programs for the elementary grades: A best-evidence synthesis. Review of Educational Research.

PowerTeaching Wired: Reading Wings is an elementary reading program that combines the research-proven Cycle of Effective Instruction with interactive whiteboard lessons to engage students, bolster instruction, and increase student achievement. User-friendly interactive menu pages allow teachers to easily navigate through various lesson components. And the visual presentation of Targeted Treasure Hunt materials grabs students’ attention and captures their imagination.

Vocabulary
The vocabulary portion of a PowerTeaching: Reading Wings lesson is student-friendly, presenting the vocabulary words in a clear and concise fashion. With a click of the teacher’s mouse, students can see vocabulary identification strategies, definitions, and sample sentences. Animations of the fix-it strategies, such as Scrub It, capture students’ attention while showing them how to use the strategies to understand words.  Lessons may also contain further vocabulary supports, such as images, to help students gain a deeper understanding of their words.

Class Discussion
During the Class Discussion component of a PowerTeaching: Reading Wings lesson, the teacher reviews the Team Talk questions with the class. If necessary, the teacher can click on the questions on the interactive whiteboard to show the answers. The 100-, 90-, and 80-point sample responses to the skill questions guide the students to provide accurate and comprehensive answers.  This page also contains buttons to access animated Class Discussion rubrics, such as Write-On, which helps students visualize the development of their Team Talk responses.

Vocabulary Practice
During Vocabulary Practice the teacher can click on the vocabulary questions to show the correct responses. In addition, during multiple-choice or cloze activities, the teacher can use the visual support to discuss why the correct response is right when compared with the other possibilities.

Throughout PowerTeaching Wired: Reading Wings lessons, various prompts reinforce the instructional process for both teachers and students.  When activated, these prompts illuminate teacher procedures and student routines that are essential aspects of cooperative learning. Icons also denote when to use cooperative-learning techniques to keep students active and engaged. The lessons serve as tools to enhance the Reading Wings curriculum and bring literature and reading comprehension to life!
